Saving Your Videos

Videotape is a means of recording images and sound onto magnetic tape. Unfortunately it is not a very robust means of archiving footage, as over time the images and sound will deteriorate even if stored correctly.
We have seen videotapes from as recently as 1996 that had serious degradation. If you have stored your video tapes correctly over the years they most likely are okay, unfortunately people tend to neglect the lowly videotape and leave them lying around on top of the TV, next to speakers or worse in direct sunlight.
Watching your tapes is also not good for them as the VCR tape head spins against the tape and wears it out.
Transferring your videotapes to digital format is the best way to save them. For most people DVD is the format of choice. DVDs are accessible, easy to duplicate and have excellent image & sound quality. Although DVD's are quite robust a good scratch can render them unusable, so making copies is a good idea.

"Memories are priceless" states Craig Burdes owner of The Transfer Studio, a company that specializes in the transfer of memories contained on film, video, audio tape, slides and photos to DVD and CD. "Too often", he continues, "families neglect that old box of little film reels, videos and slides until the passing of a loved one brings their importance to the forefront. Also as time goes by, these archives are slowly deteriorating, stressing the need to transfer them to a more modern format like DVD.

I got started in this business in exactly that fashion, a dear friend whose father had passed away, asked if I could transfer his 8mm film collection as I was running a video production company and had the basic equipment to do it. The positive reaction I got from my friend's family made me really think that this is an important service that people really need. I started the business in North Vancouver and still have many repeat customers servicing the area with our Capilano Mall drop off location. My wife and I have started a family so Nanaimo was a natural choice for us to move to".

The 102 year old property at 235 Milton Street is an amazing space to house our new studio.

"I look forward to viewing some historic footage of this beautiful city", says Burdes and adds "we offer free consultation, excellent service and reasonable rates".
